ALDEN

The hunters had been in my forest for a week. For seven days, I’d been trailing them, stalking Kane’s every move. The size of his hunting party might make him feel safer, but it also made it impossible for them to hide. Now that Moira knew he’d been using magic to pass through Larkinge, Kane no longer had that trick at his disposable.

His young wizard was suffering. They were moving in circles, crossing paths they’d been on days before. Kane’s frustration was palpable; all of his hunters were just as uneasy with him as they were with the dark tangle of trees around them.

Moira was keeping her magic paced and measured. We were using the same tactics we always used when there were trespassers in our territory.

She’d send them terrible dreams, ones where the trees were alive and watching them, where shades lurked in shadows, hungry for any who got separated from the group. The hunting party all had dark circles under their eyes and watched the shadows with paranoid gazes.

“Cassius,” Kane growled, loud enough for me to hear it where I was hidden in the distance. As an alpha, I recognized the command Kane put in his voice. My lip curled. “Which way to the wolf king?”

The boy’s eyes clouded over and his magic stung my nose, a sickly-sweet scent I loathed. After a week of watching the wizard carefully, I’d determined that he may have magic, but he was completely untrained.

And Kane was draining him dry.

One of Cassius’s nostrils began to drip blood as he turned in a circle, seeking my power. He couldn’t know Moira had fifty times the training and experience and was hiding me from his magic.

Cassius’s lifeforce was being frivolously wasted.

It bothered me because it was tearing Scarlet apart.

“Cassius,” Scarlet said, her voice thin and desperate, “Stop. You’re hurting yourself!”

Kane glared at her. “He can stop as soon as he’s located my quarry.”

“Tell me,” Scarlet said, jaw clenched, “will we be able to make it out alive without Cassius? Because it looks like he’s killing himself so you can have your wolf.”

“You need me to kill that wolf just as much. Or have you forgotten?”

Her nose scrunched, and I could see it was painful for Scarlet to keep quiet.

Something she said must have worked, though, because Kane gave an angry snort. “Enough, Cassius. We’ll find a place to make camp. Perhaps if the wizard rests a bit, he can actually be useful.”

The hunters and Scarlet went about setting up their camp. Watching them hack away at the shrubs and bracken to make space annoyed me to no end. Their fire burned with Larkinge wood. Scarlet made her place as far from the fire and the men as she dared. It wasn’t until she saw Cassius lying down under a makeshift shelter that she allowed herself to relax.

Using care, I crept up to her, invisible but human. She’d be able to see me, but none of the others would.

How are you enjoying the forest? I sent through our bond.
